The Drigungpa are one of the eight schools derived from the teaching of Phakmodrupa Dorje Gyelpo whose seat was at Densathil. A hermitage was founded by Minyak Gomring, a disciple of Phakmodrupa, and in 1179 Jikten Gonpo (1143-1217 inaugurated the monastery.
